You are planning your wedding and really want to make it personal by including something you've made yourself. Trying to save some money is probably part of your motivation and as a self prescribed do-it-yourselfer, I can completely understand that! I love trying new projects, and have a closet full of unfinished projects to prove it!
There are numerous ways you can add your personal touch and cut some expenses along the way!For instance .... consider making handmade, or homemade (yum!) favors, personalized tags for your favors, decorating candle holders with ribbon or paper, sewing special table runners, etc.....
I recommend tackling something that can be worked on months or weeks before your wedding day!
However, when it comes to designing your own wedding flowers,
I beg you.. think twice! Not just because I am a florist and want to sell you flowers, (even though I would), but consider the logistics........
First, where would you purchase your flowers?Do you know how many stems it will take to fill that vase?
When you receive your flowers, they will need to be stripped of any leaves that may fall below the water line, thorns need to be removed, stems cut, and hydrated in special solution. You will end up with a mountain of stems, leaves and packaging on your floor.
Depending on the type of flower, some will open extremely fast and will need to be kept in a floral cooler, while others may take a few days to open.
Next comes the arranging, which takes up a lot of space, especially if you are making 15-20 centerpieces! -Vases, water, cutting all the stems again, possible broken flowers which might leave you short on blooms, and leaves all over the floor.
If you're not making these at your reception site you'll need to think about transporting them.
You'll need boxes to set containers in so they don't tip over, newspapers to put between them so flowers aren't crushed and broken, and vehicle room! It's amazing how fast a van can fill up!
If you are coming from out of town, where would you do this?
There will be guests arriving and last minute details to take care of.
Do you really want to be doing all of this during the last 2 or 3 days before your wedding?
I definitely think it is well worth it to spend a little bit extra and hire a professional to take on this task so you can enjoy your guests, have a manicure and try to relax so you can look your best for the big day!
